The Divine Woosters!
By Stephanie McCallum

My Great Uncle Alf (Tree) and Thomas Brandon Wooster's son told me this story when I was a little girl.

Stephanie's Great Uncle Alfred John Wooster in WW1

It came about as he was a water diviner and was rapt that his niece and my mum Frances (Jack) Roberts also had this gift. We were all trying our ability with Uncle Alf on our front lawn in Lyndhurst Road when he noticed that I too could do it. As a tester he put his hands next to mine on the forked willow branch and it snapped right through the middle. He and I together were too strong for it. Yes I too have the gift.

He then told us about being wounded in the desert during the 1st World War. The troops were thirsty and there was no water. Because of his injuries he couldn't walk unaided so they put him on a stretcher. No forked willow branches so he cocked his rifle in half and used that. He found water and the troops were able to dig down and find a supply of suitable water for drinking.

I think this was an amazing story of endurance and water divining ability. I am sure lives were saved because of my lovely Great Uncle Alf. He was a hero in my eyes. I obviously inherited this ability from him through my mum. Wonder if there are any other Wooster line that has this gift? Tiaan Jarman, Delwyn's grandson has. I use a bent copper wire these days but only do it for fun as I always have done. Incidentally, there is a stream running directly under my house.
