Joe, as he was known had been a member of Uxbridge band. Missing in action since the evening of 12th September 1916, presumed dead on or since that date. On receiving orders for the attack on 11th September 1916, the 1st/8th assembled during a heavy barrage on and behind Leuze Wood. In consequence the attack was postponed until midnight. Their objective was reached but the enemy lauched a heavy bombing counter-attack and the 1/8th lost a large number killed and wounded.
