Private Sydney Ellis of Nelson was a member of the Nelson Ambulance Corps and formerly resided at 35 Regent Street, Nelson. Private Ellis was one of the first contingent of ambulance men to leave Nelson for active service. He was drafted first to Chatham, then to Deal and then to Belgium. He was captured whilst attending to a wounded German. He was released in order to accompany some wounded English soldiers who were being exchanged for wounded German soldiers, prisoners in England.
