HMS Hawke, a protected cruiser completed in 1893, saw pre-war service in the Mediterranean and famously collided with the White Star liner Olympic in 1911. When war came, this elderly ship served as part of the Royal Navy blockade, established to prevent German ships from reaching the open Atlantic. On 15th October 1914 she was sunk by the German submarine U-9 in the North Sea about 60 nautical miles off Aberdeen. 527 men were lost, 451 of whom, including Captain Williams, are commemorated at Chatham.
