On 3rd March 1916, at Ypres, Walter received a serious grenade injury to his left arm and was in hospital for five months. Below are the medical charts plotting his temperature and pulse rate over the first month. Also there is a laboratory report on suspected bacterial infection:

It would appear that after his discharge Walter was directed to attend the military hospital at Warley and went to the wrong place (Chelsea). This prompted a supportive letter from the local Police, explaining that it was a genuine mistake on Walter's part:
