Melvyn, or Snow as he was known, played rugby union for Poverty Bay between 1955 and 1957. On 10th August 1955 he played in a match against Australia for a joint team from the Poverty Bay and East Coast unions, losing 15-6 after there had been every indication of a much closer score.
