1482 John Rose Brandon, his wife Mary and 7 children arrived in Lyttleton aboard the 'Roehampton' on 7 March 1858, After arrival, they made their way to land they had chosen to the East of Payne, This is what is written about him in Chapter 7 (The founding of the Township) of a book entitled "Rangiora".

J. R. Brandon (who) chose land to the east of Payne. A captain in the ordinance section of the British army, John Rose Brandon had just completed twenty-five years service in India, part of it with the Rajah of Oude. She married John Church, who was buried at High Wycombe on 23 Dec 1638. He was a carpenter. Their daughter Judith was buried on 6 Apr 1632, so perhaps they were married around 1630. There was a marriage between John Church and Judith Maye on 15 Feb 1630, but this was at Marsh Gibbon - still just in Bucks but a long walk from Wycombe. Not impossible, but unreliable.
