Mary's birth name was registered as Sherwin and recorded as such on the 1911 census. However, on her death record they used her step-father's name of Stevens, so it is possible that Arthur Stevens was her biological father. | Sherwin, Mary Celia (I1189468)

Mary's DOB is somewhat uncertain. The documents giving different dates: Births & Baptisms record (Ireland) 23 Nov 1879, 1901 Ireland Census abt. 1880, 1911 Ireland census abt. 1882, Marriage certificate abt. 1884, 1939 Register 22 Jul 1880, Death Index abt. 1878. | Craig, Mary Jane (I791)
|
| 1555 |
Mary's year of birth is recorded as 1868 on the 1939 Register and abt 1866 on the 1911 census. However, there is a record on the birth register for Mary Povey in Jan-Mar 1864 in Highfield, Wiltshire and a baptism record for her on 29 May 1864, giving her father's name as William. The newspaper report of her wedding gives her father as the late William Povey of Swindon.
We therefore believe her DOB would be 15 Dec 1863. | Povey, Mary (I1684510)

Merstham Tunnel Mystery:
In 1905 his youngest sister Mary Sophia Money was found murdered and it has become known as the Merstham tunnel mystery.
Her brother Robert Henry Money was a weird guy & was suspected of murdering her & of getting her to steal money for him from the dairy shop in Lavender Hill London that she worked in... but the case remains unsolved to date.
In 1907 Robert Money got his brother James William to buy out his share of the dairy and moved out, gadding around town & telling folk he was wealthy with rows of houses etc, of course he wasn't, but he never told his family where he lived or what he was up to, they had no idea he was married or had kids. But in 1912 Robert Henry Money killed his wife & his 3 children, injured his OTHER wife & supposedly committed suicide, burnt beyond recognition. Afterwards it came out that the two wives were in fact sisters Florence & Edith Paler/Paylor & Robert had been using many alias'. It's known as the Eastbourne tragedy of Enys Rd.
There is masses of newspaper coverage for both murders & several books have accounts of them.

More was Annie's mother Sarah's maiden name. Sarah was unmarried when Annie was born and married Robert Stephens in 1881. It would seem unlikely that Robert was Annie's natural father since she used Moore as her name on her marriage record. However, she did use the name Stevens on the birth entries for all her children. | Stevens, Annie Frances (I03023)
