519 Albert enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry ('G' Company). He was based at Chatham but disptached to the Dardanelles with the Marine Expeditionary Force from 6 February 1915. It is not clear how long he spent in the Dardanelles but from his records, it appears that he was wounded twice.
On 24 January 1916 Albert was posted to "HMS Cyclops II". This was a shore base at Scapa Flow, operating land defences and minesweeper craft. On 1 January 1918, he served at Hoy Battery (Orkney) and whilst serving there, married Isobel. He returned to Chatham on 28 March for a short while before returning to HMS Cyclops where he remained until he was demobilised on 30 September 1918.

Hoy Battery, Orkney:

Hoy Battery No 1 was one of three large gun batteries designed and positioned to protect one end of Scapa Flow between the islands of Orkney and Hoy. It was probably one of the most important defensive locations of both WW1 and WW2.

In 1915 the three batteries were equipped with guns manufactured in the United States and manned by a mixture of Royal Marines and local men of the Orkney Royal Garrison Artillery. After WWI the three batteries were dismantled and the guns scrapped. The site of Battery No 1 (The Castle) was approximate 1 mile from the south coast of Orkney but although Battery No 2 forms the basis of a restored museum, No 1 Battery is long gone and sits under a housing estate, known as Innertown. 531 Another Bernard George Wooster located on the John Knight Wooster tree and born in Hillingdon in 1908 was initially confused with this one.

However, we now have irrefutable evidence (The Hillingdon man was named as a Lieutenant Commander in his brother's obituary) that this one born in Gravesend is NOT the one awarded the DSC in 1944.

This is also backed up by information submitted by the Gravesend man's grandniece, Teresa Smith:

The Bernard George who was born in 1900 in Gravesend was my great uncle, his older sister Gertrude was my grandmother. We often talked about the family tree and she never said that he was mentioned in despatches. As far as I know, and his obituary in the Customs Service magazine bears this out, he stayed in Scotland (the family were in Leith from about 1918) after his father Ernest, also in the Customs, moved on, finally ending up in Kent. No mention of naval service. The obituary says that Bernard was at Granton from 1926 until 1946 when he returned to Leith until he retired. His record in the Customs wasn't particularly distinguished and he failed to get promotion. I don't think he would be the Bernard George who's service record is on the website.
Wooster, Bernard George (I191924)

532 Approximate year of birth supplied from burial record. Parents unknown but could be John and Phoebe WOSTER. They recorded a baptism on 17 July 1768 in the parish of St Mary Mounthaw, London (although there was a burial of a child later the same year in the same parish). Wooster, John (I49)

533 Archibald's birth is not registered on the Victoria BMD. The Greathead One-name study site says that Lily and William moved from Ballarat to Western Australia in 1904 "with their two children", but if Archibald was with them there should have been three children. This brings about the possibility that Archibald may have been adopted after they moved to Western Australia. Greaves, Archibald William (I192)

546 As yet, no definitive link has been found to confirm that George was the son of Timothy Wooster and Ann Tucker. There is however, very strong circumstantial evidence to link him to this family.
1. There is an entry on the Bucks FHS Baptisms for a George Wooster, son of Ann Wooster on 23 Jun 1797 in High Wycombe. There appears to be no other Ann Wooster around at that time, although why Timothy wasn't mentioned is odd.
2. George is in Lambeth at the same time as this family and is a chairmaker, just like Timothy (who died in Lambeth in 1837) and from the census returns, George was born in High Wycombe.
