Civil Defence Gallantry Award

King's Commendation for Brave Conduct. Wireless Assistant Ronald Stanley George Worster, Special Wireless
Section, Eastern Command Signals. At 2135 hours on October 17th 1940, an enemy H.E. bomb exploded at the
entrance to Fort Bridgewoods. This bomb set fire to a stationary military lorry in which were seated six members of
the Auxiliary Territorial Service and two First Aid Nursing Yeomanry motor drivers. Messrs. Worster and Hilder were
about 20 feet from the spot where the bomb fell and although partially stunned by the explosion, entered the blazing
lorry. Mr. Worster at great personal risk rescued one of the F.A.N.Y. drivers who was badly injured, and whose
clothing was ablaze, by dragging her from the lorry and beating out the flames with his bare hands. In the meantime,
Mr. Hilder was rescuing the three surviving members of the A.T.S. from the lorry. He was then joined by Mr. Worster,
who by this time was suffering from his injuries and from shock, but who would not give up his rescue work until all
the occupants of the lorry had been extracted. LG 17 January 1941; 35043, p. 337
