| 353 |  | Joseph Worster – Convict – Link to the GWT? Joseph Worster was convicted of larceny at the Old Bailey on 30th January 1837, the offence being committed in Poplar in London: Details He was sentenced to transportation for seven years. His age at the time suggests he was fifteen and hence born in 1822, and this accords with most of the available data. However, a physical description of him suggests he was nineteen, which would put his DOB at 1818. He was kept on the prison hulk York at Gosport in Hampshire until 24th July when he was transferred to the Euryalus at Chatham. On 24th August he was transferred to the Royal Sovereign for transportation. This ship sailed from Sheerness on 31st August and arrived in Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) on 9th January 1838. Details Upon arrival, in his physical description (found at Tasmanian Names Index), it not only gives his age as 19, which would mean his DOB was around 1818, but it also gives his birthplace as High Wycombe which would very likely place him on the GWT. On the Bucks Baptisms the only Joseph of the right age is a Joseph Wooster baptised at All Saints in High Wycombe on 22 May 1820, parents Edward and Martha Wooster, Labourer. Edward and Martha are not currently on the GWT. In 1838 Joseph was sentenced to a "road party" for three months after being suspected of theft from his master’s house: Newspaper Article Joseph got his "ticket of leave" on 24th August 1842: Newspaper Article It is suspected that Joseph moved to South Australia after this and was freed on 30th January 1844, exactly seven years after his conviction. There are two possible further references to Joseph, although both have doubt attached to them. In 1850 he was cited as a creditor in a bankruptcy case, being owed £39: Newpaper Article and in 1952 he was fined £10 for supplying liquor to a native: The S. A. Government Gazette, July 15, 1852, pp. 424-426. Port Lincoln 13. March 25th, Joseph Worster, overseer, was brought up charged with giving spirituous liquor to Murpalta, an aboriginal native. He was fined ten pounds, and this extreme penalty was inflicted in consequence of his being an old and determined offender on the same score. My report of January, 1849, and the Record of the Court show as much; he continued the practice since that period, and in cases where natives only are witnesses, he possessed facilities for evading the law. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 354 | | Kate Brandon and William Veitch From Rev. Brian Brandon Kate was born in Wanganui, the 11th child of Richard and Lucy Brandon, on the 11th of April, 1882. On the return from a trip to England to visit her sister, Edith and their aunts in Bournemouth, she met William Veitch who was coming out from Scotland to take up farming. He bought a place between Gisborne and Morere but this was sold when they married in 1907. They had three children, Bill, Richard and Helen. He then bought `Powha', the place where their family grew up. Somewhere around 1919-1920 `Powha' was sold, but it was then the slump came and the farm fell back into their hands. When Bill married and continued on the farm, they moved to Whitaker Street in Gisborne. When William died, Kitty built a small house at 16 Clifford Street to be closer to the town. Kitty was totally blind for the last four years, and for the last 7 - 8 months of her life as she deteriorated in her health she was cared for at the Chelsea Private Hospital. She died in Gisborne on the 16th of October, 1982, just six months after reaching her 100th birthday. |

Per Manitoba, Canada, Birth Index, on Oct 4 1888 in Assiniboia, Manitoba, Canada, Leversedge Samuel Brandon was born to Elizabeth Doidge. The 1906 Canada Census shows Leversedge, 56, immigrated 1870, and Elizabeth, 57, immigrated 1857, Brandon, living in MacDonald, Manitoba, with daughter, Lilliam M., 19, and son, Leversedge S., 17 Franklin News-Herald, Tuesday, Feb 29 1944: Leversedge S. Brandon Jr., 54, died at 1:30 am Tuesday after suffering 9 weeks with a heart ailment. He was born October 4, 1889, in Hadingly, Manitoba. He lived in Franklin the past 25 years, for several years affiliated with Wesley L. Fry in the Wesley L. Fry & Company Garage on Howard and Elk Streets, when they had the Cadillac and LaSalle agency. More recently he worked for Dravo Dredging Company, Bradford, as a steam fitter. He was a member of Oil City Local 37, Steamfitter's, and of St. John's Episcopal Church. Having served in World War I with the British Air Forces, he was a member of Franklin Post, American Legion. He married Margaret Woodruff and she survives, with a step-son, John E. Stuttler of Franklin; a sister, Mrs. Lillian Mullen, Winnipeg, Canada. |

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Parish Guild there, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Minnie Rebekah Lodge. Surviving are a son, john Stuttler of Franklin; two sisters, Mary W. Lane of Franklin, and Evelyn W. Enos of New Castle; 2 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. Deceased is an infant brother. |

| 370 |  | Melancholy Accident SOUTH BUCKS FREE PRESS SATURDAY OCTOBER 1st 1859 PENN: MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT On Saturday last a most distressing accident occurred in this village to Mr JOHN WOOSTER - baker. It appears that Mr Wooster's horse was a vicious tempered animal and was in the habit of kicking, so much so, as to require to have forefoot strapped up before it could be safely approached. On Saturday morning, Mr Wooster being somewhat pressed for time, ventured to harness the horse without adopting the usual precaution, and when put on the crupper, it kicked out in a most vicious manner and laid Mr Wooster prostrate. The injury received was so serious that he died the same evening. On Monday an inquest, before F Chansley Esq., Coroner, when those facts being given in evidence the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. We understand the horse has been shot, and that a subscrip¬tion has been set on foot, that, the widow who is left with four children, shall not be a loser from the loss of the animal. We doubt not that the appeal will be liberally responded to. --------------------.------ Postscript John Wooster was my Gt gt grandfather and aged 36 at the time of his death. He had been orphaned at age 5· What was not publicly known, was, that his wife was one month pregnant with my gt grandfather, who was given his Father’s name of John. , Shirley Wooster |

| 384 | | Newspaper Article - Two Maori War Veterans The above is a recent photograph two veterans of the Maori war, viz. Mr. G. H. Robinson, of South Head. Sydney (left) and Mr. Charles Wooster, of Nabiac (right). The former is 86 years of age and the latter 90 years. They enlisted in the Sydney contingent in 1862 and fought through the whole of the campaign. It is believed that they are the only survivors of the second Waikato regiment. Mr. Wooster was a prisoner of war under Te Coote and was taken to the head of the Wipa River, just above Peronga. In spite of his 90 years Mr. Wooster is in good health and retains all his faculties. |
