J. R. Brandon (who) chose land to the east of Payne. A captain in the ordinance section of the British army, John Rose Brandon had just completed twenty-five years service in India, part of it with the Rajah of Oude. Something of an eccentric, he had occupied the chief cabin and was accompanied by his wife and seven children. [3]
