  • Notes
    • Another Bernard George Wooster located on the John Knight Wooster tree and born in Hillingdon in 1908 was initially confused with this one.

However, we now have irrefutable evidence (The Hillingdon man was named as a Lieutenant Commander in his brother's obituary) that this one born in Gravesend is NOT the one awarded the DSC in 1944.

This is also backed up by information submitted by the Gravesend man's grandniece, Teresa Smith:

The Bernard George who was born in 1900 in Gravesend was my great uncle, his older sister Gertrude was my grandmother. We often talked about the family tree and she never said that he was mentioned in despatches. As far as I know, and his obituary in the Customs Service magazine bears this out, he stayed in Scotland (the family were in Leith from about 1918) after his father Ernest, also in the Customs, moved on, finally ending up in Kent. No mention of naval service. The obituary says that Bernard was at Granton from 1926 until 1946 when he returned to Leith until he retired. His record in the Customs wasn't particularly distinguished and he failed to get promotion. I don't think he would be the Bernard George who's service record is on the website. [3]
